# Slide by slide

**Slide by slide** mode lets you build a presentation one slide at a time. Instead of writing one prompt for the entire presentation, you can specify exactly what you want on each slide. If you'd like, you can also choose a specific layout for each slide.

**Slide by slide** mode is useful if you have a very specific *content structure* in mind and want more control than [starting from a prompt](/ai-for-presentations/generate-a-presentation/use-a-prompt.md) will allow, but you're not working off an [existing document or article](/ai-for-presentations/generate-a-presentation/upload-a-file.md).

## How to use Slide by slide mode

Launch Plus AI in [Google Slides](/plus-ai/install-in-google-slides.md) or [PowerPoint](/plus-ai/install-in-powerpoint.md).

Click on **Slide by slide.**

### Set up your presentation

In the left panel, you can add a presentation title and additional instructions on voice and tone.

You can also add and delete slides to change the length of your presentation.

### Add content to each slide

Click on each slide to edit it.

Add a slide title and slide content. You can add as much or as little detail as you'd like (up to 5,000 characters per slide.)

### Select a layout

If you'd like, you can choose a specific layout for each slide. Or you can just leave it on auto and have Plus AI choose.

### Generate slides

When you're happy with your outline, Plus AI will proceed by generating the slides in your presentation.&#x20;

If you did not start from a template, you can choose a presentation **theme**. Themes allow you to choose the visual look and feel of your slides, including fonts and colors. Pro users can create and save [custom themes](/ai-for-presentations/custom-branding.md).

{% hint style="info" %}
Newly generated slides are added to the end of your presentation. If you didn't start with a blank file, scroll down to find your new slides.
{% endhint %}

You can keep editing with Plus.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Editing your presentation

After your presentation is created, the add-on will close automatically.&#x20;

At this point, your slides work just like any other Google Slides (or PowerPoint slides). You can edit them directly, share them, or export them as a PDF or other file type.

The Edit with Plus AI sidebar will open automatically to help you continue to refine your deck.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://guide.plusai.com/ai-for-presentations/generate-a-presentation/slide-by-slide.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
